Bioluminescence, the ability to glow in the dark, is yet another facet of the natural world that is astounding. This jewelry celebrates this amazing phenomenon that can be found in certain mushrooms, fish, insects and other life forms.

Mushrooms symbolize the beauty and magic of nature, and the amanita muscaria that these earrings are based on is the quintessential mushroom. Albeit that teal is not their color of origin, but a little artistic license can keep life fun. It is the mushroom that was featured in Alice in Wonderland, and was the subject of European folklore, and often represented in Christmas tree ornaments. These earrings pay homage to these mushrooms, and to the fields and forests where they are found. They are handcrafted from jeweler's brass and Sterling, and carefully hand-painted, and sealed with protective resin. The stems dance lightly beneath the caps, and bits of the decorative elements will glow in the dark after being exposed to bright light for several minutes. The measure a scant 3/4"wide and 1" long without the Sterling earring wires. These earrings are light and fun to wear.

What summer would be complete without the experience of seeing the flashing lights of lightning bugs on a warm evening? This Lightning Bug Necklace turns this into a year-round experience. I made it out of fine and Sterling silver, enameled it with vitreous (kiln fired glass) enamels, and then added a little magic so that it actually glows just like the real thing (after it is charged by putting it near a bright light for a minute. It hangs (and sometimes flies from) and 18" oxidized Sterling necklace.

Okay, so nautilus shells may not be bioluminescent, but they are beautiful, and bioluminescence is cool, so why not combine the two? These nautilus shell earrings do indeed glow in the dark, an ability that certain sea life forms possess. They are also somewhat translucent, so seemingly glow just a bit during daylight hours, also. I make them out of Sterling silver and carefully handpaint them, sealing them with protective resin. They measure a little more than 1" high, by 3/4" wide, not including the Sterling earring wires. They are light to wear and seemingly float like a nautilus.

Bioluminescence is the ability of certain life forms to glow in the dark. Certain mushrooms, insects (think fireflies), plankton, jellyfish, and fish possess this. It serves different functions such as communicating with others in the same species, warning predators, and attracting prey, among other purposes. These fish earring borrow on the idea of bioluminescence. When exposed to a bright light for several minutes, they will glow in the dark for hours. I craft them out of Sterling, and use different pigments to add color and glow. They are resined twice for durability. I developed a way to create translucence in jewelry, and these fish feature this. They measure 1" x 3/4" and are light and fun to wear and to give.
