TRANSLUCENCE (Clarity)

I love translucency, the passage of light, and am excited to have figured out a way to allow this to occur in jewelry. These pieces incorporate this amazing feature.

Bioluminescence is the ability of certain life forms to glow in the dark. Certain mushrooms, insects (think fireflies), plankton, jellyfish, and fish possess this. It serves different functions such as communicating with others in the same species, warning predators, and attracting prey, among other purposes. These fish earring borrow on the idea of bioluminescence. When exposed to a bright light for several minutes, they will glow in the dark for hours. I craft them out of Sterling, and use different pigments to add color and glow. They are resined twice for durability. I developed a way to create translucence in jewelry, and these fish feature this. They measure 1" x 3/4" and are light and fun to wear and to give.

Golden Wing Earrings

Glasswing butterflies are yet another amazing facet of our natural world. Their wings are often clear, with perhaps minimal color, which allows them to blend in with their environment. The butterfly here is the Pink-tipped Clearwing Satyr (Cithaerias pireta). I have come up with a technique that allows me to add translucence to jewelry. This allows me to pay homage to clearwing butterflies. I carefully add small amounts of color to the wings which are then resined twice for durability. I hand fabricate them out of Sterling wire, and they are light and fun to wear. They measure 1" tall by .75" wide, not including the Sterling earring wires.

Bioluminescent Angel Fish Earrings

Hummingbird moths are found around the world. Their wings are often clear, and move so quickly that they are mistaken for hummingbirds as they flit from flower to flower. These earrings are inspired by hummingbird moths. I make them out of Sterling silver and use transparent resins to capture the clarity that the moths have. I carefully apply metallic pigments and embellishments that are inspired by the moths. I believe that we all have wings, and wearing these is a reminder of this.
These earrings measure 1.25" without the earring wire. They are very lightweight and fun to give and to wear. They arrive on a product card in a gift box.
