When exposed to a bright light briefly, the stars glow in the dark! I make it out of lacquered jeweler's brass, and it is suspended from an 18" Sterling chain. It measures 5/8" wide by 3/4" tall. I make them out of Sterling and brass, and carefully handpaint them, finishing them with a protective coat of resin. They measure 3/4" wide by 1" tall, not including their Sterling earring wires.

Sandpipers are cool. And Spotted Sandpipers are especially cool. They are found by both saltwater and fresh water, which means oceans, rivers, ponds, lakes...This would explain why their range map covers North America *and* most of South America! And this would also explain why I see them when I am at one of my favorite swimming and slag-hunting spots (see slag jewelry on website). Or more specifically I see *him*. In explanation, spotted sandpiper females breed with several males in a season, and thus lay several clutches of eggs, and it is the males (who are not necessarily the fathers) who raise the young. I first became aware of the existence of a fresh-water sandpiper when I saw him (as it turns out) making a ruckus when I appeared. These earrings honor such an adaptable and versatile bird! I make them out of Sterling and brass, and carefully handpaint them. They measure 1" wide by 1" tall, not including their Sterling earring wires.

Spotted Sandpiper Earrings

This Sterling chain bracelet features a lovely piece of stone stack iron furnace slag. I found the slag in the Gale River near where I live, but it could have come from any one of countless iron furnace sites across North America and Europe. I like the organic and unique shapes that I find, but I do polish the pieces a bit to bring up the shine, similar to how they look when wet and fresh out of the river. This piece is set in silver with little silver wire spirals that echo whirl pools acting as links to the adjustable chain bracelet. The focal point measures 1" wide by 3/8" tall. The bracelet measures 9" when fully open and is easily adjusted to whatever length the wearer likes, and the cool thing is that it can be easily adjusted one-handed by the wearer.

Slag Chain Bracelet

This cuff bracelet features a lovely piece of stone stack iron furnace slag that I find in the Gale River near where I live. It could have come from any one of countless iron furnace sites across North America and Europe. I like the organic and unique shapes I find, but do polish it a bit in order to give it a shine which also brings out the color, kind of what it looks like wet in the river. I set this piece in a Sterling cuff bracelet that I made, and finished the ends with little Sterling spirals, based on water whirlpools. These prevent there being blunt ends that may not always be comfortable to put on or wear. The bracelet is 6" long, before forming it, which should fit most wrists.

Blue Slag Cuff Bracelet

This necklace features a lovely piece of stone stack iron furnace slag. I find it in the Gale River near where I live, but it could have come from countless other historical iron furnace sites across North America and Europe. I set this piece in Sterling with a little whirlpool swirl and a Sterling leaf. The slag has my version of Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing with gold. I didn't use real gold, but mixed gold mica powder into a medium and filled a couple small divets. The pendant measures 1/2" x 1" tall and hangs from an 18" Sterling chain.

One redeeming quality of November here in the Northern realm is that the milkweed seedpods burst open and the plethora of seeds inside explode out. I live in the midst of milkweed fields (yay monarchs!) and when this happens, it looks more like living in cotton fields, a crop that never caught on in Northern NH...So in addition to recreating more milkweed (yay monarchs), this explosion of seeds also provides a really fun (and hopefully meaningful) opportunity. The rules say that you can grasp a dried out milkweed stalk and shake it until all those little seeds fly off on the breeze on their floss (yup, that's what the white silky stuff is officially called). And as they float off on their floss, you can make wishes, as many as you like! This necklace allows you to make wishes year-round, even in places that aren't grown up in milkweed. It's made out of Sterling and copper, and features 3 double-sided milkweed seed, floss and all. Its chain is made out of links, some of which look like milkweed leaves, and individual floss-less copper seeds are attached for extra wishes and some fun movement. It closes with a handmade clasp and is an adjustable 25".

One is set with a lovely green peridot, one with a blue topaz, and the middle one has a silver carved (not cast!) frog basking in the sun. The links that create the chain are swirls of silver that echo the movement of water. Each link is attached by 2 jump rings, which give it stability. It has a me-made toggle clasp which makes it really easy to put on and take off by oneself. It measures 7 1/2" long which should fit most wrists.

Who doesn't love woolly bear caterpillars? In addition to being cute, (they prefer the French "chouette"), they are the essence of resilience, hibernating during the winter and then pupating in the spring, before hatching into the lovely Isabella Tiger Moth. This hibernation in larval form is why they may be the last and first caterpillars seen before and after the winter, acting as crawling "book-ends" to our cold season. They are also generalists, meaning that they are not fussy about their diet, consuming various different greenery. These earrings are a tribute to this stalwart caterpillar (they prefer the French "surprenant"). I fabricate them out of Sterling silver and lacquered jeweler's brass, and carefully hand-paint them, finally sealing them with a coat of jewelry resin. The caterpillars measure 7/8" x 7/8", and the total length with earring wires is 1 3/8".

Everyone loves dragonflies, and for good reason/s, but dragonfly nymphs do not get the credit that they deserve! This necklace is one small step in that direction, (small steps being their operative means of transport, those short little legs not being able to muster giant leaps). Dragonfly larvae live underwater for up to 4 years, and when the time is just right, emerge and do their final molt into the winged air-breathing adults that we know and love! When I was just finishing this necklace, I stopped by my down-the-hill river for my daily dip, and noticed what I assumed were 2 empty larval shells on an exposed rock and took them for a fun photo op. Much to my surprise, one of them had not hatched yet! Back at home, it wasted no time in doing so, in the company of the necklace that honored it. What a thrill! The necklace features a carved (not cast!) nymph, sitting on a silver stone above a lovely piece of river-blue slag (which I found in the same river!) embellished by some aquatic arrowhead plant leaves. The Sterling chain measures an adjustable 26 inches.

Imagine relaxing on your back in a forest, (or better yet, go do it!) and looking up into the canopy to see the patterns of sky created by tree branches that are almost touching. This is the result of crown shyness. Crown shyness is the phenomenon that occurs in forests in which the top branches of certain species of trees do not touch each other. This allows neighboring trees to get more sun exposure and thus to thrive. It also prevents some predators, such as caterpillars, from crossing from one tree to another. This jewelry is inspired by our precious forests and the trees that comprise them.

These Sterling earrings measures 3/4" wide by 7/8" tall and are 2" long with the handmade Sterling earring wires. They are set with Ethiopian opals that glow like the moon. The pendant has a finish on it which will prevent it from tarnishing. And surprise! The stars in this jewelry shine in the dark if exposed to a bright light first!

Crown Shyness Sterling Necklace with Ethiopian Opal

Sometimes the larval form of a creature is the one that is the most memorable, and in my opinion, this can be said of the industrious caddisfly larva. They live in their larval form for 1-2 years, collecting small twigs and pebbles which they attach to themselves as both protection and camouflage. They look like moving sticks as they roam around their aquatic stream or pond bottoms, and are a sign of clean water (yay!). This caddisfly larva pin features this star creature making its way across a river-bottom pebble, next to a Petosky stone, speaking of cool things. Did I mention that Petosky stones are fossilized coral found in the Midwest US, which used to be ocean floor?! And that I found this one in (guess where!) Lake Michigan in Petosky, Michigan, while sitting by the lake's edge as the the current brought them in? I polished and set the stone, fabricated the caddisfly larva and then brought them together in a union of eras and Sterling. The pin is 1 3/4" wide by 1 1/4" tall.
